The Most Important Story of the Year
Breaking news, the most important story of the year, without a doubt.
Coffee and doughnuts MAKE YOU SMARTER.
Researchers at the University of Barcelona found that "the caffeine-glucose combo boosts your brain in terms of attention and memory."
I say, we all move to Spain where obviously the IMPORTANT research is being done.
So drink up, my brothers and sisters. Partake in the holy donut. Dunk it in the brown liquid of joy. Your brain will thank you for it.

To Lara, my twinsie, another attempt at a poem, for our birthday
It's only another year
A year of laughter
sprinkling down
A year of joy
frosted over the days
A year of love
swirled torus linking beginning to end
It's only another year
May you have dozens more
and all of them truly filled with donut days

A poem, for your birthday
We reach into the jar
a spectrum of sugar
we remove a single grain
maybe yellow, red or green
and place it on the frosting
where it rests in sweet collusion
with all the sprinkles of your life

Thankful
One of our favorite writers, Lara Zielin, posted a contest on her Help4Writers blog. In it, she asks folks to list what they're thankful for.
Well, you can no doubt guess my response.
In my comment, I describe my thankfulness like this:
Circular perfection. Frosted bliss. Sprinkled love. Holy donuts, for inspiration, for nutrition – okay, not for nutrition – for their uncanny ability to encapsulate all that is good and right in the world.
And now I ask you. Why are YOU thankful for donuts?

At the top of our wish list
How many times has this happened to you?
You're enjoying a tasty donut, only to get called away to an important meeting. How can you save your donut, to be sure you can enjoy it later?
Well, never fear. The answer is Doughnut To Go, an entirely necessary new product that easily holds any standard sized donut. From the website:
Doughnut To-Go is a compact and convenient carrying case....for your donuts! Yes! Donuts!
The Doughnut To-Go will insure your donut will be kept warm and fresh. You can even put it in a microwave and wash this case when you are done eating your donut so you can always go anywhere you want with your favorite donut in your hand!
Finally. One of life's great problems, solved.

Today's Meditation
Submitted for your approval, a poem of sorts.
I sit
anticipating
waiting
I close my eyes
and in my mind
I gaze at your frosting
your sprinkles
your sugary glaze
You are my donut
You are holy and good
You fill me with sweet joy
I open my eyes
and you are there
in my hand
in my eyes
in my mouth
with sprinkles of joy
with frosting of peace
with glaze of love
if only you stop and taste it

Thought for the Day
"I was just thinking it might be easier if we all worshipped donuts or something. I mean, they taste good and they never hurt anybody."

Finally. Proof that donuts are a MIRACLE FOOD.
Read this, my sprinkled acolytes.
A morning donut could improve memory and the ability to concentrate.
From the article:
If you're having trouble concentrating or remembering things in the morning, it's often because your brain is missing the sugar (generally in the form of glucose) it needs to function normally. The sugar is used as an energy source for the brain so it can do all the things it needs to do. One of those things is producing an important neurotransmitter chemical called acetylcholine, which is important to a good memory, your ability to pay attention, and your mood.
Your brain makes acetylcholine from choline, which is obtained from the diet, and from acetyl groups that originate from the metabolism of sugar. We frequently obtain choline in our diet by eating lecithin. Lecithin can be found in many different bakery goods such as donuts and cupcakes and is commonly added to chocolate. Thus a tasty chocolate covered donut first thing in the morning is going to provide your brain with everything it needs to pay attention and learn new things.

LaMar's Donuts
I wish I lived close to one of these stores.
LaMar's Donuts.
Apparently, their donuts are "the ultimate indulgence, purely heaven, tender and airy, sinfully good."
Mmmmm. Sounds like our cup of tea. Or our bowl of sprinkles, as the case may be...

Voo Doo Donuts
THE VOO DOO DONUT IN PORTLAND OREGON
If I'd known this was in Portland I'd have made a special trip.
You are looking at a Fruitloop Donut, Capn' Crunch Donut, the "Dirty Snowball" (chocolate cake donut covered with pink marshmallow glaze and surprise filling), the "Simpsons" donut, and a Bacon Maple Bar.
I never thought I would say this but Portland Rocks! The fact that you have this amazing donut shop has made you a to do on my list of places I would love to visit.
Come to think of it, I do need a job.

I think I'll pass
Here's one of the most unappetizing headlines we've seen lately:
Free ice cream, donuts at sewer ceremony
Way to take some of the best things on earth and completely ruin them.
And it's a little bit morbid, too, when you recall this recent sad story.
Best. Video. Ever.
Watch this, donut lovers. More proof that Lara Zielin is, quite possibly, the world's best author.
Her first novel, Donut Days(!) is now out in paperback.

Holy Donuts! I'm a Guest Blogger!
Yes, my new favorite writer, Lara Zielin, posted my short story, Holy Donuts, on her blog.
This is awesome on so many levels, not the least of which is her wonderful intro.
She is the author of a novel called -- hold onto your sprinkles -- Donut Days. It debuted last year and comes out in paperback soon.
Everyone reading this blog should own it.

National Donut Day
You can trace the roots back to 1938. According to our good pal Wikipedia, National Donut Day began when the Salvation Army distributed donuts to soldiers during World War I.
One volunteer wrote: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee." Which sounds pretty much like heaven to me.
Then, in 1938, in honor of that, the Chicago Salvation Army started Donut Day as a fundraiser.
Today you can visit Krispy Kreme and get a free donut. Dunkin Donuts will also give you a free donut, but you must purchase a beverage.
But wherever you get one, just make sure you get one. Today is Donut Day, the holiest day of the year. Take, eat, share. Donuts are good. And so are you.

Our New Favorite Book
So I'm reading a novel, minding my own business, enjoying it, when what should appear? Yes, donuts.
Specifically, on page 164 of Allison Winn Scotch's new novel, The One That I Want, a character enters the scene carrying a box of Dunkin Donuts.
Yes.
What a magnificent moment. It's like she's writing directly to ME.
Okay, there are further extenuating circumstances here.
I first discovered Allison Winn Scotch through her entertaining presence on Twitter. Then I discovered her informative blog. And I then checked out her first novel from the library and, when the character spent time watching Price is Right at novel's beginning - which bookended beautifully with a Price is Right mention at the end - I knew I'd found a great author. So then I ended up tricking her into sending me an advance copy of her latest novel. Imagine my delight when I opened it to find the GREATEST INSCRIPTION EVER.
Why do you not own this novel? Go and buy it RIGHT NOW.
And get yourself a half dozen donuts to tide you over.

Like being touched from God himself
From guest contributor Boney
My name is Boney, and I have an addiction.
My favorite donut is a bavarian creme or custard filled donut with chocolate frosting on top. My favorite custard/pudding (outside of a donut or pie) is banana pudding. A little over a month ago when I logged into my facebook account, Krispy Kreme had sent out an update advertising their limited time offering of the "Banana Pudding donut". Now, I don't often visit the Krispy Kreme store in my area because, let's be honest, Krispy Kreme delivers donuts to the local convenience stores which makes it easier to commute when I have a craving than to drive the 45+ miles to the nearest store. With the merging of my 2 favorite sinful temptations, I just had to jump in the car and make the hike...
What I found at the store was exactly what I imagined it would be, and more. What I saw were dozens upon dozens of banana pudding donuts were being boxed up and handed across the counter and into the open arms of smiley faced people who looked like they had just found the cure for cancer. When I made my way to the counter, I asked for a dozen and I salivated as the clerk placed each donut carefully into the carton. I almost felt dirty for looking at a donut so lovingly, like it was my long lost girlfriend who I just couldn't wait to kiss again.
When I got back to my car, I ripped into the carton and put the donut and all it's sweet sweet goodness up to my lips. As I took my first bite I can honestly say, and even though this may be a family site, that I would've done to that box that no man should ever do. On my drive home I felt like talking to the box, asking the other 11 (oops, 9.. I ate 3 in the parking lot!) where they had been all my life.. as if they were family members who I was just meeting for the first time. I felt like I owed them a little conversation, a little love, because of the fate they faced once they reached my home. That's what I gave them, the attention they deserved. I sang to them in the car, so they could get a feeling for how sensitive of a person I am. They experienced some of the road rage that comes with living in the Washington DC area. When we got home, I placed them on the counter and made sure to close the box securely because I wanted them to be fresh to live another day.
Breakfast pastries are the best. In a world where all day long we eat salty and hot meals, and usually you only indulge at dessert, it's nice to treat yourself to a sweet pastry for breakfast. It feels like you're breaking the rules that you learned as a kid with mom!
The banana pudding donut gets 2 thumbs up from me. I wish it was a full time offering at Krispy Kreme but perhaps that will make me long for it even more, after it's gone on April 18.

Mmmmm Bacon
Amazingly tasty treat or a sure sign of the impending apocalypse?
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the bacon donut.
If you are in New york, please sample one and report back to us. If the universe has not already imploded from the sweet bacon-y goodness.

Yes. Donuts are becoming a Trend.
This article by Jacquelynn D. Powers crowns donuts as the New Cupcake.
I say All Hail Our New Ruler! No messy paper wrapper to deal with, no top-heavy, unwieldy shapes. Only pure round goodness.

Birthday Remembrance
A terrific tribute to Dunkin' Donuts, from Christopher Borrelli.
I considered why a doughnut shop that refuses to spell "doughnut" correctly has hung on for decades. Dunkin' Donuts just turned 60. But you probably didn't know because you probably take Dunkin' Donuts for granted.
As did I, once.
The piece is very nice, an appreciation of what he calls the "'70s AM radio of the fast-food world."
