What a beautiful sight

Spread across the table
Claws and rings
Sweet donut perfection
As much fun to view as they are to eat?

Morning Devotion

From the gospel according to google news, a found poem via cut & paste.

You would think there is a green light in front of
The new Crispy Donut shop near the baseball fields

the key players in the donut market unleash
a steel donut-shaped bearing

By 7:50 am Tuesday, donut-filled booths popped up around a drizzly campus to seduce students
between a beer or a donut
"It is a delicious little treat that everybody loves,"

These are the best donuts ever.

I am weak, but the donuts are strong

This morning I popped into the grocery store to pick up a bag of carrots and a bunch of bananas.

By accident, I also purchased these.

If you'll please excuse me, I have to go fill my coffee mug now.

Behold, the Triple Chocolate Donut Crown from Dunkin Donuts.

Truly we are blessed to be living in a time of such abundant sweetness. Frosting of light, spread your goodness upon us.

Ode to a Donut, Opus #5 (opus spicatum)

Is a donut from a box
 purchased at a supermarket
  a true donut?

Is a baked donut
 not just some shadow
of reality but the real thing?

The answer lies within
 yet more questions.

Do they bring you joy?

Do they hearken back to a time of
 happiness and sweetness and youth?

Do they lighten your burden?

Do they delight or inspire or please?

If you can answer "yes" but once to any of these,
then you have your ultimate answer.

Morning Devotions

So I wake up to this news -- fellow contributor Ms. Otaku is starting her day with this.
Oh holy donut. Toroid of love, frosting of light, sprinkles of hope. You tempt us with your precious sweet perfection and we indulge ourselves so that all may share in your eternal tastiness.

I'm so jealous.

Dynamo!

My brother sent me a link to yet another wonderful donut place I cannot patronize because I live on the wrong coast. Grrr.

But truly I tell you, Dynamo Donuts looks like the real deal. It's in San Francisco and they have daily donut specials and I mean just look at that lovely photo of a cup of creamy, frothy coffee on the front page of their site.

Oh man. I need to go there. Maybe I'll start by following them on the twitter.

End of today's sermon.

Designer Donuts

Mint mojito.

Pomegranate thyme.

Bing cherry balsamic.

Lemon chamomile creme custard.

Designer donuts are the next big thing, shoving cupcakes back into kids' lunchboxes where they belong. Or so reports Caryn Rousseau of the AP. I say, bring it on!

Let's go crazy out there. Let's get Tang donuts. And Crunch Berries. And, well, let's brainstorm.
Any other ideas...?

Donut Paradise

The other day I got a chance to watch Donut Paradise, a Travel channel special.

By the end of the hour-long show, I needed a towel to mop up the puddle of drool.

Travelogue style, the show visited several (in)famous donut shops across the country, including Cafe du Monde, where I spent New Year's morning for several years in a row. Starting out with a fresh plate of beignets and a steaming cafe au lait made each year just a little better. Sure, they're not (strictly speaking) donuts, but they are warm and tasty and covered with powdered sugar and if you haven't had them you HAVE NOT LIVED.

The special also visited Portland's Voodoo Doughnuts which just made me more ashamed that I've never been there.

Truly worth an hour (or less with TiVo) of your time. Watch it and, afterward, I dare you not to rush off to your local purveyor of fine donuts.

What I Learned in 2009

If I learned anything from this past year, it's to act now. Eat your donuts today. Because if you wait too long, there might not be any left. Or, even worse, the store may close its doors permanently.

So go out and grab your dozen TODAY.

For the new year, I wish you much coffee and many donuts, either literally or metaphorically, whichever works better for you.

And most of all, I wish you love. Big boxes of frosted love. With sprinkles.

Ode to a Donut, Opus #4 (opus latericium)

A thousand flavours from a maund she drew

Of sprinkle, powder, and of shaved chocolate,

Which one by one she in a vat threw,

Upon whose heated rim she was set;

Like usury applying wet to wet,

Or monarchs' hands, that lets not bounty fall

Where want cries 'some,' but where excess begs all.

Of folded menus she let many go,

Which she perused, sighed, tore, and gave the vat;

Cracked many a ring of chocolate and dough,

Bidding them find their sepulchres in fat;

Found yet more rings gladly shrouded in icing,

With slighted batter and affectedly

Enswathed, and sealed to curious secrecy.

(co-copted from the Shakespeare)

Ode to a Donut, Opus #3 (opus quadratum)

You sparkle like a multicolored diamond.
Your scent is the of sweetest nectar in God's kingdom.

I am enveloped by your presence.
All else seems to slip away when you are near.

You complete me.
You are my everything.

You are... my lovely donut.
I shall cherish you forever.

...or at least for the next five minutes.

Now THAT'S a Holy Donut

Rabbi builds a donut menorah.

Yes, the donuts are kosher.

The Rabbi is quoted as saying, "If you go roller skating and use donuts to make an edible menorah, who doesn't want to be part of that?"

I may be ready to convert.

Frank's Birthday

Today is Frank Sinatra's birthday.

Even he, the man himself, enjoyed holy donuts.

Ode to a Donut, Opus #2 (opus reticulatum)

What sweet, calming scent hath entered?
A fragrance deeply inviting.

The donut.

A thing so grand in splendour,
yet so humble in appearance.

It takes on many visages.
A new costume for each flavour.

Yet for all its looks and tastes,
the scent remains the same.

Breathe deeply.
Recall your youth.

Bite and chew.
Rekindle your soul.
